New wool project!

This is the new wool project I got started on yesterday….It’s from the book ‘Simple Appeal’ by Kim Diehl. I seem to be drawn to anything she makes/designs..I love the colors she uses and the use of applique with piecing and wool. I can pick her stuff out every time! This is a 30” quilt/table topper and it sure uses up a lot of wool….But I’m sure enjoying myself making it….I’ve got all of the wool pieces cut out and most of the center stitched down, then on to the outside wool oval units….you can see I laid some of them out, they will go all the way around the table topper. Just looking at this makes me smile!

DSC04248

I’ve got one more block done on the Prairie Rose BOM, so only one more block to go and I will be putting this one together…..finally! After I start some BOM’s I wonder why I ever did them…this is one of them….It’s okay, but it’s really not something I would ever do again. My civil war BOM was the same way, after it was done I really didn’t like it. Oh well, I will finish this project and maybe after it’s quilted I’ll change my mind.

Embroidery Snowmen….

I’ve got the embroidery snowman all put together, now I just need to quilt it. I love it! Thanks so much Kelly Kreft for sending me the pattern…I changed it up a bit, added more satin stich and did some other stitches that were thicker and would show up more. I’ve already got other ideas for the next one I do….I love it in black…I’m glad I didn’t have any red thread just laying around….I also didn’t like the border on this one, so I changed it to just 2 1/2” blocks, I’m glad I did that too!DSC04240

And here is Hilary’s baby quilt all quilted and bound…I’m okay with it, I could have done a better job on the quilting, but it’s one more that I practiced on….so hopefully each one I do will be an improvement.

I just got started on a wool project, I will post pictures tomorrow!

UFOs….finishing a few of them!

Well, I’ve been doing my best to try and finish some of those projects I started over 20 years ago! I have a few more than I thought, and they’ve been bugging me for the last few months, so as I was cleaning my sewing room and finding them, I kept them all out and have been doing my best to work on them. I’m still starting new projects…I just can’t help myself!  I’ve completed my 4th wonky log cabin quilt this past week…It’s probably my favorite one, it’s got the fireside plush on the back and it’s so soft and warm…It was made for my daughter Karmon…..my grandson Walker is helping  hold it up in these pictures.

DSC04226DSC04228

Thank you to Kelly Kreft,my friend from Colorado for sending me the pattern for this fun snowman embroidered wall hanging….it will measure 16 x 20 when it’s finished.DSC04232DSC04234

The picture with the redwork is from the picture on the pattern…..I really wanted to do it in redwork, but even with a drawer clear full of embroidery floss,  (and I’m not exaggerating on that either,) I couldn’t find the red I wanted…so I’m making do with black for my first one…I’m changing up the embroidery stitches on a few of the panels too…I think this will be fun and easy. I guess it came out of a magazine quite a few years ago.

DSC04223

Here is the quilt I’m making for my niece’s baby who was born a week ago…It’s on the frame and should be done in about a week…DSC04230

A new project I  started this month…a BOM from Primitive Gatherings…It’s a 14 month BOM….so you’ll be seeing new blocks from this one for quite a long while…I just love wool!

DSC04231

This is the 7th block in a BOM I should be done with, but I’ve been too busy doing ‘other’ things that to me seemed more important! Now it’s time to get this done…DSC04235

A tub full of 3 dimensional flannel bow tie blocks…I had most of these sewn together and then decided I really didn’t like how they looked, so I tore them all apart and will try another layout….this is a UFO from at least 25 years ago….and by the looks of some of the blocks you can tell that I really didn’t know what I was doing!DSC04237

My great find at a store in Norton this week…all silk ties for .75 each! I was quite happy with the price and the colors….brighter ones, which I needed for the tie quilt I’m ruminating on!

Okay….so I showed you a few of my UFO’s and some newer projects….I am going to whittle down on half started projects…I am! I am! I am!

Flannel ‘Wonky’ Log Cabin Quilts

Well, it’s off to the races with the flannel wonky log cabin throws I’ve been making. It’s always been this way…I can’t seem to make just one of anything. Be it cooking, crocheting, or quilting….I tend to go overboard! I guess that’s just the way I’m wired….If one (of whatever I’m making at the time) looks this good, then by the 4th one it will be even better, or so the reasoning in my mind goes. I’ve got three of the wonky log cabin throws done and another two almost put together and ready to quilt. I’ve got yards and yards of flannel, so I haven’t had to buy too much to do these projects, and they are also a great stash buster.

DSC04207

DSC04209

This one was made for my daughter’s good friend Stacee, pictured on the right….also in this photo is my daughter Karmon and my grandson Walker…He had to help hold the quilt! Since I knew this quilt was going to be for Stacee, I prayed for her while I was making it…which makes this quilt special, it was made with love!DSC04218

And here is a stack of 24 more blocks for another one! This one might be for our family Christmas get together where we usually hold an auction…with play money of course!

DSC04221

The start of another one for my daughter Karmon……she needs this one to throw on her couch upstairs.

DSC04216

These are three dimensional flannel bowtie blocks that I started making about 20 years ago when I didn’t know what I was doing…I found them in a drawer in my sewing room and started setting them together…I have enough made for a medium size throw…It’s kind of fun to finish these U.F.O’s that you didn’t even remember you had! Also in the photo is Morris my 17 1/2 pound cat….Usually Wilber kitty is helping me in the sewing room, but today Morris wanted in on the action!

Well, enough of this…time to get back in the sewing room and make some more flannel blocks.

Flannel Wonky Log Cabin Throws and ‘Big Red’

Well…I’m feeling better all the time about my longarm. She and I are getting better acquainted and are getting along great! I loaded and finished a quilt last week and loaded another one this weekend, I’ve figured out the tension, and the daily maintenance of the machine; she’s working like a charm!DSC04178DSC04189DSC04191

DSC04199

DSC04196

And here is the darker one done…except for the binding which will be a red flannel….Not the greatest picture, but I love how it turned out.

DSC04200

Above is the start of the light colored quilt….I’m doing a simple all-over design which I’m getting better at.DSC04202

Now this is what I call fun!

Wonky Log Cabin/Crocheted Hats

I’ve been working so much the past few weeks that my sewing has had to take a back seat….I hate that, but with Wayne being home with a broken ankle, I guess it’s a good thing that I’m able to work as much as I have.

I’ve got all of the retro flower blocks done for two baby quilts, just need to sew them together and add the border and the names….One is spoken for and the other one will just be ready when the next girl baby is born…DSC04164

I’ve also started on those wedding gifts I spoke of on my last blog….actually one is a birthday gift and the other two will be wedding gifts….these are made from scraps of flannel…which I got a bunch of from my mom’s stash before she died.DSC04170

And above is the start of the light colored version and below is the start of the darker colored one….

DSC04173

And here is the one I made for Karmon and Clint last fall….these are very fast to make, and don’t require too much skill at all….this would be excellent for a beginning  quilter.

V__C1F0

And I’m crocheting on my breaks at work and in the evening when I get home….been selling quite a few of my hats, so I thought I’d better replenish my supply! I just need to decide which of the ear flap hats will be for girls and add the flowers to them.

Emersyn’s Birthday Quilt

Well, I got Emy’s quilt done in time for her birthday…it was really a ‘rush’ job, but I got it done…I was very happy with how it turned out too….With the help of my friend Kelly Kreft I quilted this on my new Nolting longarm. Almost every time someone sees this quilt they ask me right away if it’s appliqued….And of course I say absolutely not! This block has 12 curved seams in it…and there is lots of matching seams. I’ve made so many of these, I don’t even pin when I sew the curved seam…

I’ve already got 21 more of these blocks made and I will be making a baby quilt for my sister Susie’s soon- to- be- born granddaughter…I haven’t decided if it will be 12 or 16 blocks, I’ll have to lay it out and see what I think.

I think the next project for me will be two more flannel ‘wonky log cabin’ throws…I’ve promised them to people for their birthday and wedding…If I don’t get on the ball they will be really late!

Off to sew some more!

Happy quilting,

Kris

Emersyn’s Quilt

I can hardly wait to get this one quilted! Hopefully with Kelly coming to give me some longarm lessons, we can get this one done….This is probably one of my favorite quilts..I love the retro flowers and I love her name on the quilt…I did a blanket stitch around the letters with #8 black perle cotton.

The only problem I have with this quilt, is if one of the blocks jumps out too much. When Wayne, my husband looked at it this morning, he started singing the Sesame Street Song…”One of these things just doesn’t belong here” and I thought if he notices this so will everyone else. It really didn’t bother me until he pointed it out…I still love the block, just wondering now if I should switch it with another one….Don’t know if I have the ‘oomph’ to do it or not….Just in case you’re wondering, it’s the pink polka dot with the cupcakes.

Emersyn’s Quilt and Evelyn’s Album Wool Quilt

I stitched the last stitch in my Evelyn’s Album Wool Quilt last night while watching T.V….Woo Hoo! I love how it turned out and I told it so today! I tend to talk to my quilts while I’m working on them, that sounds kind of stupid but I find myself doing it all the time….this one is pretty small, about 52x66…..DSC04142

Emersyn’s Retro Flower Quilt is coming along rather nicely. I have 46 blocks made and only need 30 of them…I guess I’m just an over-achiever! I’ll pick the best of the leftovers and make a baby quilt for my niece Hilary’s baby girl that is due this fall.

DSC04141

I might make a table runner with what’s left after the baby quilt…Never will I be accused of wasting quilt blocks!DSC04145

I’m not completely satisfied with the baby quilt yet….I think I need another bright pink block instead of one of the plainer ones…..I might switch one out of Emersyn’s and replace it with one of these…we will just have to see…..

I’m on vacation this coming week and my friend Kelly from Colorado will be arriving on Tuesday for three days of one on one longarm lessons…I am so excited I can hardly stand it….I’m planning on learning a lot these next few days…Hopefully enough that I can get Emersyn’s quilt done by September 1st…

Emerysn’s retro flower quilt….Will I get it done before her 1st birthday?

I decided this week that I would like to get the quilt I started for Emersyn about 3 or 4 months ago done by her birthday which is September 1st….I’m  doing very well and I have 31 blocks made for it….Now I’m trying to decide how big I want it. The one I made a couple of years ago for Lesley was 42 blocks and of course I want this one smaller.  The two pictures below are of Lesley’s quilt. I free motion quilted this one on my domestic machine which was very difficult…good thing I won’t have to do that again! These blocks are very labor intensive…12 curved seams in each block and I’ve gotten 12 of them done in two days, which is nothing short of a miracle! Each time we visit Lesley and I see this quilt on the bed, I love it more. If the seams aren’t matched exactly it sticks out like a sore thumb, so I’ve gotten quite good at these blocks since I’ve made so many of them so far.DSC03491DSC03480

And here are Emerysyn’s blocks…they are made from Aunt Grace’s fabrics, I don’t know how many I’ll use or which ones for sure…the leftovers will be put together for a baby quilt for my niece who is expecting a baby girl.

DSC04128DSC04138

DSC04131

I’ve just finished binding this Kansas Troubles log cabin quilt, this is the second one like this I’ve made, I gave one to my sister Barb, it’s very special since my mom cut out the flowers and ironed them on for me so I could stitch around them. She did this for me right before she went into the nursing home. I love this quilt too! The label says 4-patch which is wrong,  so I’ll have to change that….Ugh!

DSC04132

DSC04134

I’ve got another one of these wool pictures done…I’m going to have to find some black wool somewhere, I’m running out and I want to make a few more of these. And now I need to get to a Hobby Lobby so I can hopefully find some black frames that will fit these.

Happy Quilting,
